The surname Portalatin is italian in origin and means "by the latin gate".

There is a gate outside Rome called the Porta Latina, named after the church of San Giovanni a Porta Latina. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porta_Latina I am not sure if this is related to the Portalatin surname, but the family crest has a tower/gate on it that is very similar to the Porta Latina.

I was told that there were 2 families in Italy, the Porto's and Latins and these families joined and combined their name. I am not sure if this Italic tribe is related to the Portalatins, but there is information on a Latin family in Italy.

Later the Portalatin's moved to Spain, specifically Castilla la Vieja. Later the Portalatins moved to Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.
